How does your product use or challenge conventions, and how does it represent social groups or issues?
Since my film is focuse on following a teenage girls life as she struggles with finding her passion for photography, it shows a realistic and not so bright life. The melancholic tone of nearly the entire brings out an unease feeling since Arias inner thoughts are shown to the audience. It is a representation of not only teenagers since it shows how important self discovery is to a person but also represents depression as Aria is effected heavily by it and tries to overcome it towards the end as ballet motivate her to find passion. Conventions of psychological drama is implemented heavily in the film since it has a character driven narrative as we focus on Aria developing her identity. The unreliable narrator is used as well since Arias surrounding is dull and gloomy during her daily routine and everything, even her photographs are all negatively presented because of her judgement. The lighting which is mostly naturalistic using darker tones and warmer yellow shades, intentionally used to make the film seem more realistic which is another convention of this genre. However, the film may challenge the conventions of psychological dramas by creating a sense of hope and indicating Aria’s self discovery. Typically, many psychological dramas end on a darker note or having an undefined ending however, See the Light presents a positive transformation, showing Aria beginning to heal and reconnect with her artistic passion. The use of ballet as a symbol for emotional expression and inspiration adds a unique element to the genre which also makes it more personal.
